Unfortunately with the current economic situation we are facing today, thief’s are trying everything they can to find ways to get an easy dollar. Phishing schemes along with others ways of stealing someone’s identity are on the rise. There are almost daily news reports on how someone’s identity was stolen or how a company’s processing department was compromised.

You must understand that the Albany Federal Employees' Credit Union will never for any reason call, text or email any of our members to request them to give us personal information. If someone does call, text or email you requesting personal information the best course of action is to just hang up or delete their message. If you are worried that you may have inadvertently given your personal information in regards to any of your accounts it is necessary that you immediately call us at (229) 439-1448 and let us know. Time is of the essence.

Protect yourself and be proactive. One of the small things you can do is to check your credit union and credit card statements once you get them every month. Verify the different charges. Make sure they are correct. If something appears to be incorrect, call us immediately so we can look into getting your money back. Again, time is of the essence. If a fraudulent charge is on your account, you only have so many days to get the charge taken off your account. Don’t wait.

Another way to protect yourself is to be smart. Pay attention to how you discard your personal information in the trash. Always shred unwanted items that have personal information on them. Also, be careful about the internet retailers you use. Only make online purchases with well known internet merchants.

A sad side of identity theft is that up to 10% of the 9.9 million cases filed in 2008 were caused by someone the victim knew. These friends and family members may not mean to hurt you, but in the long run they do. Always keep your social security card along with your unused checks in a safe hiding place at home and make sure you know who has access to them.

You can never be too safe. Always be smart and think fast when it comes to your personal information.
